Build a House—Get the Lot for Free

CASS COUNTY—In a modern-day version of the Homestead Act, the town of Marne is giving away building lots to encourage folks to move there. Yup, you read that right—free land if

you build a house on it. It’s a program started about 3 years ago in an effort to replace dilapidated teardown houses with new ones in this village of 150 people. “We have one new house and a new business because of it,” says Marne’s mayor, Randy Baxter. “We’ve given

away another lot, and the person is going to build as soon as he sells his house in Omaha.”

The town is proceeding in a slow but steady manner—raising money as they go along to purchase lots with old homes on them. “We raised $1,000 with a soup supper recently,” says Randy. “It’s going to be a 20-year project, but I think we’re on the right track.”

Marne is only a 50-mile commute to Omaha and less than that to other employers

in western Iowa. “Plus we have a low crime rate, and it’s a nice place to raise

kids,” adds Randy. For more information, call him at 1-712/781-2351. Or visit the town’s Web

site at www.marneiowa.com.
